AdBlue In Diesel

In South Yorkshire we have seen progressively more occurrences of AdBlue contamination whereby someone has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is mostly caused by motorists not knowing the way to work with it (remember: it is not a fuel additive), and partially due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly near to one another on the car.

So, what's the issue with having AdBlue in a diesel tank? Because AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it is actually just like pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water do not mix at all and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Also, the urea is highly corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is susceptible to crystalising, damaging injectors and fuel filters.

If you find you poured AdBlue in the fuel tank get it drained at the earliest opportunity. And most definitely never turn over the motor - not even to shift it from the pump. In the event that you did start the car you would very likely have to have the whole fuel system flushed and filters replaced.

Water contaminated fuel
